For over a decade, the Assisi Development Foundation (ADF) and the Government of Canada have forged a strong partnership championing the rights and welfare of Indigenous Peoples. As Canadians, we are committed to acknowledging the truths of our shared history and advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. As Prime Minister Carney affirmed, “The government will work in full partnership with Indigenous Peoples—advancing shared priorities such as health care, food security, housing, education, economic prosperity, conservation, climate action, and emergency management to build a better future.”

Guided by this commitment, Canada has collaborated with ADF in the Philippines to empower indigenous communities, preserve their cultural heritage, and promote sustainable development. A key initiative is the Land and Livelihoods: Accompanying Indigenous Peoples in Guatemala and the Philippines project, implemented with Hope International Development Agency and ADF. This partnership has strengthened economic empowerment, leadership, and skills development among Indigenous communities. During monitoring visits, we witnessed firsthand the richness of indigenous traditions, the expanse of ancestral domains, and the IP communities’ growing capacity to advance their rights and manage their lands.

Following Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, the Government of Canada also partnered with ADF to provide relief and rehabilitation to affected families—another testament to our shared commitment to human dignity and resilience.

These collaborations illustrate what can be achieved through mutual trust and shared purpose: advancing inclusive and sustainable development, uplifting indigenous communities, and preserving their cultural heritage.

As ADF marks its 50th anniversary, the Government of Canada extends heartfelt congratulations for its enduring dedication and impactful work with Indigenous Peoples. We look forward to continuing this meaningful partnership in pursuit of our shared goals.
