Bahay Maria, Inc. has evolved over 42 years, but its foundation remains rooted in the Assisi Program, named by founder Amb. Howard Q. Dee. In 1990, Carmela and Vicky Borres took residence in the “Home of Mary” at 95 Amapola St., Bel-Air 3, Makati City, marking a significant chapter in its mission.
In 1983, following Ninoy Aquino’s death, Howard Dee and the Rosary Movement, led by His Eminence Jaime Cardinal Sin, proposed to the CBCP a Marian Year (1984–1985). Bahay Maria served as the secretariat, coordinating activities centered on consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, three million rosaries, and national renewal through faith. This movement sought divine intervention against the challenges of Martial Law, culminating in the EDSA Revolution. Cardinal Sin’s call to prayer and action mobilized millions, leading to the peaceful transition of power in 1986.
Bahay Maria continued its mission as a center for social and spiritual development. In 1987, with support from European bishops, it secured a permanent home, enabling it to support renewal programs, the Eucharistic Year (1987), Bible Year (1989), Catechetical Year (1990), and World Youth Day (1993–1995). It welcomed AMA and World Youth Day volunteers, as well as children in need.
Bahay Maria’s daily routine emphasizes discipline, prayer, education, and personal responsibility. Children attend school, maintain hygiene, and engage in household chores. The home fosters holistic development, encouraging music, arts, and values formation. Through structured discipline and a faith-centered environment, the children grow into responsible individuals.
In 2007, Bahay Maria expanded with Bahay San Jose, a refuge for boys, gifted by Tita Maring Feria. The home continues to seek further growth, aspiring to establish more shelters for children in need. Rooted in faith and service, Bahay Maria remains committed to its mission, believing that “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” To God be the glory, through the intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
