My introduction to the Assisi Development Foundation came through its Tabang Mindanao Program. During a trip to Pagadian City with the Assumption Sisters to meet Bishop Antonio Tobias, I learned about Assisi’s mission: to alleviate the suffering of the underprivileged in the Philippines, especially indigenous communities.

When I began handling the Educational Assistance Program (EAP)—founded as the Piniyalan Community by Sr. Michelle L. Gamboa in 2004—I saw firsthand how it transformed lives. The program has given young Indigenous people, as well as rural and urban poor communities, the chance to pursue education, rise out of poverty, and nurture hope. Nearly all graduates have secured good jobs, aside from those still on mission or limited by illness.

As point person for the EAP, first under the Piniyalan Community and now at Holy Cross of Davao College, I ensure proper monitoring and accountability of grantees. I also serve as their Formator, guiding them in their academic and personal growth. Today, many alumni are trusted teachers in public and private schools, living secure and fulfilling lives.

While challenges remain—especially limited funds for students at Holy Cross—the commitment and support of Assisi’s staff have helped sustain the program. With their dedication, the project has changed the lives of nearly 50 poor but deserving youth.

My heartfelt gratitude goes to the Assisi Development Foundation. Because of your mission, many students have become beacons for their families, communities, and workplaces. Assisi has truly been an advocate and bearer of hope. May God continue to bless your work and multiply its impact for generations to come.
